Sappi Kirkniemi Mill

A paper mill powered by biofuels

Sappi Kirkniemi has replaced fossil fuels with biofuels in its energy production. The introduction of new reception, storage and handling facilities has made it possible to utilise biofuels in the power plant’s multi-fuel boiler. The wood bark used as fuel in the power plant originates from the domestic sawmill industry and the mill’s own debarking process, and the majority of the forest chips are also sourced domestically. In addition, the mill’s own bio-based and fibre sludges are utilised for energy production. As a result of this transition, the mill’s direct greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 90%.
