Improving construction efficiency through industrial prefabrication

The Xylino project in the Netherlands demonstrates how industrial modular wood construction can meet growing demand for housing quickly, cost-effectively and responsibly. The five-storey building, comprising 103 apartments, is the country’s first large-scale project in which the load-bearing structure is built entirely from Metsä Wood’s Kerto LVL. The environmental impacts of construction were reduced by using material-efficient Kerto LVL, PEFC-certified wood, and modules designed for disassembly, reuse and recycling. Digital product information supports the circularity of materials throughout the entire life cycle. Xylino shows that responsible timber construction can combine low carbon emissions, high quality, and industrial-scale implementation.
