Focus on sustainability
Sustainability is at the heart of the entire forest industry value chain, from sustainably sourced renewable raw materials and resource-efficient production processes to the use, recycling and energy recovery of products.
Good forest management helps to safeguard water bodies, valuable forest habitats and the diversity of forest species. At production facilities, processes have been developed to produce more finished products from less raw material. Over the past decade, emissions from production facilities relative to production volumes have also decreased significantly.
The forest industry has been working systematically to advance sustainability for several decades. This work is driven by companies’ voluntary sustainability measures and commitments. Further information is available in the Finnish Forest Industries Federation’s section on sustainability commitments and on forest industry companies’ websites. In addition to companies’ own commitments, sustainability efforts are being accelerated by increasingly stringent EU legislation and growing consumer awareness and expectations. Sustainability is essential to the success of the forest industry, and its continuous development extends across the entire value chain, from the forest to global markets.
