The forest industry operates at the heart of a climate-positive circular economy: as trees grow, they absorb carbon, meaning that products made from wood act as carbon stores throughout their life cycle while replacing more emission-intensive alternatives.
The sector also actively works to reduce emissions from its own operations. For example, logistics emissions can be further reduced by shifting transport to rail and by using higher-capacity vehicle combinations.
In addition, the Finnish forest industry is exploring opportunities for capturing, storing and utilising biogenic carbon dioxide. If realised, this could create new business opportunities in the 2030s, provided that technology, markets and regulation develop favourably.
