UPM’s goal is that by 2030 it will use only recycled nutrients at its wastewater treatment plants and utilise all side streams from its production processes. In 2025, several of the company’s mills tested new recycled nutrients in wastewater treatment, expanded their use, or introduced them for the first time. For example, a partner of UPM’s Rauma and Kaukas mills began using wastewater treatment sludge from the mills as soil-improving fibre. Through these actions, UPM can reduce the use of nutrients derived from virgin materials. The use of soil improvement fibre can in turn help reduce nutrient run-off into waterways.
