Continuous improvement in energy efficiency is a key competitive factor for the Finnish forest industry. In 2024, the sector’s mills saved more than 807 gigawatt hours of energy, equivalent to the annual energy consumption of approximately 43,400 detached houses in Finland. These savings were achieved by improving production processes, developing automation and optimising in-house energy production.
The sector’s strong commitment to long-term climate action is also reflected in the extensive participation of forest industry companies in Finland’s voluntary energy efficiency agreements year after year. A new agreement period began in 2026, introducing more ambitious targets than before.
Despite these challenging targets, energy efficiency efforts are expected to continue in the years ahead.
