The forest industry is committed to safeguarding and enhancing biodiversity. Promoting biodiversity requires a broad range of measures, which is why the forest sector has, for decades, implemented extensive voluntary actions to benefit nature.
Biodiversity is strengthened through, among other measures, nature management in commercial forests, the protection of valuable habitats, and research and development projects aimed at identifying new solutions to improve the state of nature. In addition, the sector actively contributes to the implementation of the METSO and Helmi programmes.
Scientific studies conducted for the forest industry’s biodiversity roadmap, published in 2023, show that several structural features important for forest biodiversity have developed in a positive direction. According to the findings, the biodiversity-enhancing measures currently in use significantly increase forest structures that are valuable for nature.
