The Finnish Forest Industry Federation is participating in the UN Nature Conference (COP16) organized in Cali, Colombia, as part of Finland’s official delegation. At the meeting, the forest industry will present the biodiversity roadmap of the wood processing industry and the role of the Finnish forest industry as part of the bio-based circular economy.
Diverse nature creates the basis for a prosperous forest industry. The biodiversity road map published by the wood processing industry a year ago shows that biodiversity in Finnish forests has developed positively in many measures over the past decades. The road map has attracted significant international interest and will next be presented at the UN Biodiversity Conference in Cali.
– Nurturing biodiversity and economic use of forests are not mutually exclusive issues. For more than 30 years, the Finnish forest industry and the entire forest sector have invested in the development of operating methods so that they constantly better support biodiversity and the sustainable use of forests, says Karoliina Niemi, Forest Director of The Finnish Forest Industry Federation.
Future modelling shows that the measures already in use in Finland and which will be further enhanced will strengthen the positive development in forests.
Experts from ministries, political decision-makers, researchers, and organizations from different parts of the world gather in Cali to discuss solving global biodiversity challenges. Adaptation to climate change is also strongly on the agenda. Niemi hopes that the biodiversity road map of the wood processing industry will serve as an example of how economic utilization of forests and safeguarding biodiversity can go hand in hand.
– It is great that Finnish Forest Industry Federation can participate in the meeting as part of our country’s official delegation. The presence of the Finnish forest sector in the delegation shows the importance of the sector when we seek solutions to the challenges brought about by climate change and the deterioration of biodiversity.
