Woody power and movement

Wood can make us go a long way. Renewable natural resources help us move and produce energy. One way to mitigate emissions in the transportation sector involves substituting fossil fuels with biofuels. The tall oil derived from the pulp manufacturing process, for instance, can be transformed into renewable fuel, reducing its life-cycle emissions by over 80% (UPM). Biofuels crafted from side streams of the forest industry also avoid competition with food production.

Wood can also be found in vehicles and energy-producing solutions. For example, birch plywood is found on car floors and bioplastics, and biocomposites are used in car’s interior parts. Windmill blades and towers are manufactured from laminated veneer lumber (LVL).

In the future, wood will also help us recharge our batteries, as lignin from wood will be used to produce more efficient anode materials for electric batteries.
