At Sappi’s Kirkniemi mill, long-term efforts have been undertaken to reduce raw material losses. In 2025, raw material losses to the wastewater treatment plant were successfully reduced below the stringent target level of 1.2% of total production. The improvement in raw material efficiency has reduced indirect environmental impacts associated with raw material procurement, lowered procurement costs, decreased waste volumes, and enhanced the performance of the wastewater treatment plant. Key to success has been the adoption of new working practices and seamless cooperation between different departments.
